Age Calculator — Exact Age in Years, Months and Days
This age calculator takes a date of birth and an optional "age at" date, then reports the exact elapsed age broken down into years, months and days. It also totals your age in days, weeks, months and hours, and derives your Western zodiac sign and birthstone. Everything is computed on your device from the entered dates; nothing is stored or sent anywhere.
The default "age at" date is today, so the common case needs one field. The second field exists because a great many real questions are not about the present — passport applications, school enrolment, pension eligibility and insurance all ask what your age was, or will be, on a specific date.
Why "Years, Months and Days" Is Not Just Three Numbers
Age in decimal years is misleading, and the calendar is the reason. Months have different lengths, leap years shift things, and a year is not a fixed number of days. Someone can be 30.9 years old and still be months away from their 31st birthday, and anyone who divides days by 365.25 gets a figure that drifts.
That is why this calculator reports the calendar breakdown as the primary answer — 27 years, 3 months, 12 days — which is the form every official form and legal document expects. The larger totals are there for reference and for the fun of it, not for legal purposes.
Your Next Birthday, and What Else Is Coming
Alongside the age itself, the calculator derives the following from the date of birth, all of which change on the same annual cycle:
- Next birthday — the date and the number of days remaining until it.
- Zodiac sign — the Western tropical sign for the date of birth, with its date range. Note that astrological signs are a fixed calendar convention, not astronomy; the actual constellations have drifted out of alignment with them over the past two millennia.
- Birthstone — the traditional month-based gemstone.
One boundary detail is worth flagging, because people hit it every year. A birth date of 31 December gives a zodiac sign of Capricorn, while 20 January is also Capricorn — the ranges overlap correctly at the turn of the year, and the boundaries fall on fixed dates rather than being approximate.
The Eligibility Dates You Actually Need to Check
Most administrative questions reduce to "what was your age on date X", and the answer must be exact to the day. Using the second field of this age calculator handles all of these:
| Question | Why the exact day matters |
|---|---|
| School entry | Most authorities use a fixed cut-off date, often 31 August or 1 September, rather than an age in years. A child can be eligible in one country and not another. |
| Driving licence | The minimum age is stated as "on or before" a date. Being one day short delays the application. |
| Pension and state benefits | Statutory pension age is being progressively raised in many countries, and it is a date rather than a birthday. |
| Passport and ID application | Child passports expire on the fifth anniversary of issue, so applications are often keyed to a birth date. |
| Insurance premiums | Motor and travel premiums are banded by attained age at the policy start date, calculated in whole years. |
| School, exam and sports age bands | Athletics competitions in particular use a specific date to determine an age group for the whole season. |
