Frequently Asked Questions about Area Converter
Area Converter — Metric and Imperial Area Units
This area converter handles nine units of area: square millimetres, square centimetres, square metres, square kilometres, hectares, acres, square feet, square yards and square miles. Type in either field and the other updates as you go.
Understanding it starts with one idea: area factors are length factors squared. A square metre is one metre by one metre, so converting area means multiplying the linear conversion by itself. That is why the numbers feel less familiar than the length equivalents — 1 m is 3.28 ft, but 1 m² is 10.76 ft², not 10.76× the same-looking number. It is 3.28 squared.
The Nine Units in Square Metres
| Unit | In m² | Note |
|---|---|---|
| mm² | 0.000001 | Smallest unit here; typical for electronics and materials. |
| cm² | 0.0001 | Common for document and label sizes. |
| m² | 1 | The base unit for area. |
| km² | 1,000,000 | One million m². Geographic scale. |
| ha | 10,000 | Hectare. Exactly 10,000 m², and 100 m on a side. |
| ac | 4,046.86 | Acre. About 40% of a hectare. |
| ft² | 0.092903 | Square foot. The most common US real-estate unit. |
| yd² | 0.836127 | Square yard. Exactly 9 ft². |
| mi² | 2,589,988.11 | Square mile. A land section of 1 mile on each side. |
Hectares Versus Acres
These are the two units you will meet when reading about land, and they are not close to equal. One hectare is 2.47 acres, so an acre is about 40.5% of a hectare — or, put the other way, you need roughly 2.5 hectares for every 6 acres. Getting this backwards is a classic error in property listings, and it is a big enough difference to matter: a "five-acre" plot is just over two hectares, not five.
| Area | Hectares | Acres |
|---|---|---|
| 1 hectare | 1 | 2.471 |
| 1 acre | 0.4047 | 1 |
| 1 km² | 100 | 247.105 |
| Football pitch (1 ha) | 1 | 2.47 |
Metric units scale by powers of ten, which is why the metric column above is a column of 1s and 10,000s. The imperial units do not, which is why acres and square miles feel arbitrary by comparison.
