Frequently Asked Questions about Length Converter

Length Converter — Nine Units, Both Directions, Live

This length converter converts between nine units of length: millimetres, centimetres, metres, kilometres, inches, feet, yards, miles and nautical miles. Type into either box and the other updates immediately, so you can work in whichever unit you already have. The conversion happens as you type — no button, no waiting.

Every factor used is an exact definition rather than a rounded approximation, which is why the results agree with engineering and surveying references to the last decimal place. All maths is done in your browser.

The Nine Units and Their Exact Definitions

Length units are not arbitrary. Several are exact multiples of others by international agreement, and knowing which are exact and which are not explains most of the surprising results:

Unit In metres (exact) Relationship
mm 0.001 Millimetre. Exactly one thousandth of a metre.
cm 0.01 Centimetre. Exactly one hundredth of a metre.
m 1 The base unit. All others are defined against it.
km 1000 Kilometre. Exactly one thousand metres.
in 0.0254 Inch. Defined as exactly 0.0254 m — this is the international inch, fixed since 1959.
ft 0.3048 Foot. Exactly 12 inches.
yd 0.9144 Yard. Exactly 3 feet.
mi 1609.344 Statute mile. Exactly 1760 yards.
nmi 1852 Nautical mile. Exactly 1852 m, agreed internationally in 1929.

Everything derives from the metre, and every imperial unit here is a clean multiple of the inch. So inch, foot, yard and mile are all exactly related to each other with no rounding at all. The nautical mile is different: it is defined directly in metres, which is why it is not a round number of feet.

1 metre feet 3.280839895
1 mile metres 1609.344

The result panel also prints the ratio in the form 1 m = 3.280839895 ft, which is useful when you need the multiplier for a calculation of your own.

Miles Versus Nautical Miles

These are genuinely different distances, not different names for the same thing, and confusing them is one of the most common errors in travel and navigation.

A statute mile is 1609.344 m and is used for land distances — road signs, running tracks, and anything on land in the UK, US and most of the world. A nautical mile is exactly 1852 m, about 15% longer, and is used for distances at sea and in aviation. Because a nautical mile was defined by taking one minute of latitude along a great circle, it is also the unit in which speed is expressed at sea: 1 knot is one nautical mile per hour. 10 knots therefore equals 18.52 km/h, not 16.09 km/h.
