What is the difference between a metric ton, a US ton and an imperial ton?

A metric ton is exactly 1000 kg. A US (short) ton is exactly 2000 lb = 907.185 kg, and is what US freight and industry quotes refer to. An imperial or long ton is exactly 2240 lb = 1016.05 kg, used in the UK and for shipping displacement. The imperial ton is about 12% heavier than the US ton, so choosing the wrong one is a real error rather than a rounding wobble. This converter lists all three separately.
